To optimize solar orientation and site access, this 5,400-square-foot, six-bedroom house is sited in the northern part of the property with the driveway along the west property line, allowing entry to the main part of the property from the southwest while maximizing southern exposure for active and passive solar heating. An upper bedroom cantilevers over the entry as you ascend subtle bluestone terraces to the front door. To balance privacy at the entry with minimizing direct sun in hot summer months, the east and west elevations feature smaller upper windows that bring in controlled daylight while the southern elevation is maximizing southern sun. South-facing overhangs shade the interior on hot days while allowing generous sun penetration in winter. A horizontal mahogany rainscreen wraps portions of the main house, paired with cedar shingle siding to define the exterior material palette. This approach unifies fencing, overhangs, and a separate carport structure with the main house. The project was designed and built for ModernNetZero.
